7 Life Hacks to Make You More Productive
My brain is basically an internet browser. Multiple tabs open, one is frozen mid-reload, and there’s music playing, but I’m not sure where it’s coming from. ALL. THE. TIME.
The other day, I left for a golf out and drove 20 minutes before realizing… I had forgotten my golf clubs. If you’ve ever done something like that, this post was made for you.
Maybe you’re going through life juggling kids and work. Maybe, like me, you have ADHD. No matter the reason, sometimes just getting things done can feel like a losing game. Traditional productivity hacks (color coded planners, to-do lists a mile long), don’t always cut it. Sometimes you need to think outside the box.
Here are 7 quirky tricks that I have researched and plan on trying:
1) Become Your Own Narrator
Say what you’re doing out loud as you do it:
”I am unplugging my curling iron, so I don’t burn the house down.”
Speaking the action will help your brain log the memory. You can even use voice memos to capture ideas before they vanish into thin air. Saying it helps you remember!
2) Change To-Do’s into To-Done’s
Instead of allowing yourself to be guilted by all the things you didn’t finish, make a list of the things you got done. Even the little stuff counts! Dishes are done, e-mail in box is cleared, laundry is put away.
This trick turns productivity into something encouraging, rather than exhausting. It doubles as an easy gratitude journal!
3) Life is a Game, Play it!
Race the timer, roll the dice, challenge yourself! Make boring tasks fun by turning them into games.
- Race the clock to clean the bathroom
-Roll the dice to answer that many emails
-Fold laundry before Netflix asks, “Are you still watching?”
Chores become less of a burden and a lot more fun.
4) Be “Pre-Peared”
If you like 3 hour Sunday meal prep, great! If not, this trick is for you.
-Wash and cut produce as soon as you bring it home.
-Store snacks in a clear container at eye level.
-Keep grab-and-go snack baskets near the door for days you “forget” to pack lunch.
It will certainly save you time when the mid day, “What do I eat for lunch?” rolls around.
5) Body Double
Sometimes having someone else around holds you more accountable. FaceTime a friend while you clean, or fake it by streaming a podcast.
Something about “not being alone in it” makes tasks way easier to tackle.
6) Shower Thoughts
Sometimes, you have you’re best ideas in the most inconvenient of places. Keep a waterproof notepad in the shower- or make sure a smart speaker is nearby so you can shout, “Hey Alexa, remind me to buy more shampoo!”
Your future self will thank you.
7) Outsource your Memory
Stop trying to remember everything and use what you have.
-Location reminders are great when you’re out and about “Remind me to get milk when I’m near Target.”
-Set an alarm when you start a new load of laundry so that you don’t forget to change it over later.
-Auto Refills - Let your essentials re-order themselves so you never run out.
Overall, I suppose being productive isn’t perfection. Instead, it’s finding what works for you, not against you. Sometimes, it’s less about crushing your goals and more of “at least I remembered my golf clubs.”
Try one or two of these hacks this week and let me know how it works!
